Wooden Doors

Repair, easing, draught sealing and re-hanging of solid timber doors and frames.

Timber doors move with the seasons, and a door that binds in August often rattles in January. Rather than plane away half the stile, we look at what has actually shifted — the frame, the hinges or the joints — and fix that.

Repairs we carry out

Loose mortice-and-tenon joints re-wedged and glued, split panels pinned, rotten bottom rails spliced in matching timber, and hinges reset where the door has dropped.

Sticking locks and misaligned keeps corrected so the door closes with one hand.

Hardwood species we work with

Oak for strength and open grain, teak for weather resistance, mahogany for stability in wide panels, walnut where a rich stained finish is wanted, and beech for internal joinery.

Fun fact: beech is the timber traditionally used for workbenches, plane bodies and even chopping blocks, because it is dense, close-grained and wears smooth instead of splintering — which is exactly why it behaves so well as a door edge.

Signs a door needs attention

  • Catches on the frame in warm weather, rattles in cold
  • Visible daylight around the closed door
  • Corner joints opening up at the bottom rail
  • Door swings open or shut on its own
