Sash Cord Repair

Snapped cord? We re-cord both sides in waxed cotton or nylon-core and rebalance the weights the same visit.

A snapped sash cord is the single most common call we take. It is also one of the quickest jobs to put right — most windows are back in working order inside an hour, with both sides re-corded so you are not back on the phone in six months when the second one goes.

Why we always do both sides

Cords wear at the same rate. If one has parted, its partner is the same age and running over the same worn pulley, so replacing a single cord is false economy.

While the sash is out we check the pulleys, weights and pockets — the parts that caused the failure in the first place.

The cord we use

Waxed cotton cord for original windows: it beds into the pulley quietly and looks right in a period property.

Nylon-core cord for tall, heavy or daily-use sashes, where the core stops the cord stretching and letting the sash sag.

How the visit works

  • Staff beads carefully eased off and set aside for reuse
  • Sash lifted out, pocket covers removed, weights recovered
  • New cord run over the pulley and knotted into the sash
  • Weights matched to the sash and the balance tested
  • Beads refitted and the opening left clean
