Spiral Balance Replacement

Tensioned spiral balances measured, matched and replaced in pairs on modern sash windows.

Later sash windows do away with weights and use a spiral balance: a steel rod inside a tube, wound against a spring to carry the sash. When the spring loses tension the window drops, and when the tube fails it can let go without warning.

How a spiral balance works

The spiral rod is anchored at the sash and turns as the window travels, winding a coil spring in the tube. Get the gauge right and the sash floats; get it wrong and the window either creeps up or drops like a guillotine.

Balances are sized by sash weight, height and tube gauge — we measure all three rather than guess from the opening.

Safety note — please do not DIY this

A balance is a wound spring under real tension. Releasing one without the correct tensioning tool can whip the rod out of the tube, and we have repaired plenty of window frames and hands after a home attempt.

If a balance has already failed, leave the sash closed and call us. We carry tensioning tools and matched stock.

Signs a balance has failed

  • The sash slams shut or will not hold at any height
  • One side of the sash sits higher than the other
  • A grinding or clicking noise as the window travels
  • A visible loose rod at the top of the sash channel
